Sorong, Southwest Papua, June 2026 – Effective communication is a vital element in ensuring the success of sustainable conservation. Recognizing the critical role of communication in amplifying the impact of conservation programs, the Blue Abadi Fund (BAF), in collaboration with Starling Resources, hosted a capacity-building workshop on "Strengthening Civil Society Organizations’ Capacity in Communicating Coastal and Marine Issues within the Bird’s Head Seascape."

The event, held in Sorong, Southwest Papua, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders dedicated to coastal and marine environmental preservation. Participants included Blue Abadi Fund partners, local civil society organizations (CSOs), media professionals, local production houses, and representatives from the Papua Youth Creative Hub.

Through this forum, participants discussed and shared experiences regarding various communication strategies to enhance public engagement with conservation messages. The discussions highlighted the importance of building powerful, relevant, and relatable narratives to ensure that coastal and marine resource protection efforts are better understood and supported by a wider audience.

Beyond enhancing communication management capacity, the initiative served as a collaborative space to develop more creative, inclusive, and impact-driven storytelling approaches. The ultimate goal is to document and disseminate more positive stories from the field, thereby inspiring communities and strengthening overall support for conservation efforts across the Bird’s Head Seascape.

Building Narratives to Strengthen Conservation Impact

David Kuntel, Team Leader of the Blue Abadi Fund, emphasized that communication plays a strategic role in ensuring the success of conservation programs implemented by partners on the ground.

“Conservation is not just about protecting ecosystems; it is also about how we communicate the values, lessons learned, and impacts of these efforts to the broader public. Many best practices and inspiring stories are born from the hard work of our partners in the field, yet they are often undocumented or under-communicated. Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen our partners' communication capacities so these stories can reach more people and build wider support for conservation in the Bird’s Head Seascape,” he explained.

Collaboration to Amplify Stories from the Field

Muhammad Taufik, a representative from Starling Resources, noted that effective communication acts as a crucial bridge between conservation actions and public engagement.

“We believe that data, knowledge, and program achievements yield a far greater impact when packaged into powerful, easily digestible stories. Papua is rich in inspiring tales of communities safeguarding their seas, mangrove forests, and natural resources. The challenge lies in delivering these stories in an engaging, authentic, and relevant manner for diverse audiences. Therefore, collaboration among conservation organizations, the media, creative communities, and local people is absolutely essential,” he stated.

Boosting the Confidence of Local Organizations

Representing the participants, Charles, Chairperson of the Unggul Sinergi Byak Abadi (USBA) Foundation, appreciated the forum for providing local organizations the opportunity to learn and exchange insights on conservation communication.

“This event has opened our eyes to the fact that communication is not just about publishing activities, but about building public understanding and community support for the conservation issues we tackle. We gained valuable insights into crafting stronger narratives, elevating community-driven stories, and leveraging various media platforms to convey our messages effectively. This will immensely help us scale up the impact of our programs at the grassroots level,” he shared.

Securing the Future of the Bird’s Head Seascape

The Bird’s Head Seascape is one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the world. Successfully protecting this region relies not only on field-based conservation action but also on the collective ability to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and inspire more individuals to join environmental protection efforts.

Through this communication capacity-building initiative, the Blue Abadi Fund and Starling Resources hope that civil society organizations, media, and creative communities in Papua can become catalysts for positive narratives that drive real change. As more success stories emerge from the field, public support for safeguarding the coastal and marine ecosystems of the Bird's Head Seascape will grow stronger for present and future generations.

After all, protecting the ocean is not achieved solely through actions on the ground, but also through stories that inspire, mobilize, and reinforce a shared commitment to a sustainable future for the Bird’s Head Seascape.
