Bird's Head Seascape

The Bird’s Head Seascape (BHS) is a network of more than twenty Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) spanning 5.2 million hectares of critical marine ecosystems designated and managed to protect some of the most biodiverse marine habitats in the world while ensuring food security and sustainable economic benefits for Indigenous communities and local Papuan communities

Biodiversity

The Bird's Head Seascape (BLKB), as the center of global biodiversity, is a priority for national and international conservation efforts. BLKB covers more than 2,500 islands along 225,000 km² (or 22.5 million hectares), and is home to around 75% of the world's coral species. The waters of BLKB serve as a habitat for sea turtles and marine mammals that are threatened with extinction.

People

The natural resources in BLKB support the livelihoods and food security of more than 270,000 people living in coastal areas. Coastal communities in the BLKB region are highly dependent on marine resources, with fish catches serving as the primary income source for almost all households and the main provider of protein for about 69% of households.

Economy

Through sustainable fisheries and tourism, the marine ecosystem of the Bird's Head Seascape is critical for the local economy, providing jobs for more than half of the coastal households.
