Vision, Mission and Strategy

Protecting the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of the Bentang Laut Kepala Burung

Vision

Indigenous communities and local Papuan communities, governments, and their partners eﬀectively conserve coastal and marine ecosystems of the Bird’s Head Seascape, thereby protecting the single greatest reservoir of tropical marine species on the planet, while enhancing food security, improving livelihoods, and supporting traditional ways of life.

Mission

Utilize financial resources to ensure that ecosystems and species of the Bird’s Head Seascape are sustainably managed and protected by local environmental stewards, providing benefits to Indigenous communities and local Papuan communities.

Strategy 1

Support continued and improved management of up to 5.2 million Ha of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) networks in the Bird's Head Seascape.

Strategy 2

Socially, politically, and economically support and learn from Indigenous and local Papuan community environmental stewards of the Bird's Head Seascape

Strategy 3

Increasing the BAF endowment and allocation capacity to improve opportunities for locally-driven conservation, sustainability, and community development.

Geographic Scope of the Bird’s Head Seascape

The Bird’s Head Seascape comprises the following areas:

National MPA Raja Ampat2 (Marine Protected Area of Western Waigeo Islands and Marine Protected Area of Raja Ampat Islands)
Regional MPA Kaimana (Marine Protected Area of Buruway, Arguni, Kaimana, Etna Bay, and Surrounding Waters)
Regional MPA Fakfak (Coastal and Small Islands Conservation Area of Berau Bay and Nusalasi Van Den Bosch Bay)
Regional MPA Tambrauw (Coastal and Small Islands Conservation Area of Jeen Womom)
Cenderawasih Bay National Park
